AN/UPD-501
Receiver, This was a High Probability Radar Early Warning centimetric directional finding receiver which was used to detect radar emissions on the SHF radar bands (J, L, S and X) and gave some indication of the wavelength in use, bearing, and antenna rotation period. The receiver was comprised of four wide band radio frequency amplifiers, one for each of the four antenna bearing angles. Each RF amp could be selected with a switch. Radar emissions from ships or aircraft would be received and displayed as blips on a small CRT mounted in the unit. These blips would also trigger an audible alarm whose volume level could be adjusted. There was only one drawback to the UPD501 - it could not be used if the ship's own radar was operating.
